Planning Permission for Conservatories

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from customers is “do I need planning permission to install a conservatory?” and, more often than not, the answer is no. Adding a conservatory to your home is usually allowed under ‘permitted development’ rules. There are only a few occasions where you might need to apply for planning permission, and these are:

• If the conservatory is being built on the front of the house
• If the conservatory is being built on a side of a building that’s facing a highway
• If the conservatory is going to take up more than half of the area of the original house

There may also be limits on the dimensions of the conservatory (depending on the type of property you own) and you may still need to apply for building regulations approval. The good news is that the Wilmslow Glass team will be on hand to advise on all elements of the installation including planning permission and building regulations.
